Good Know About Reverse Osmosis and RO Plant
A. About Reverse Osmosis :
In the Osmosis a weaker saline (e.g. water) solution will tend to migrate to strong saline (salts) solution. It occurs naturally and doesn’t require any external force.
For example, when you put resins in the water after 3-4 hours they swallow because the water inserts into the resin from the resin membrane.
2. Reverse Osmosis
Reverse Osmosis is just the reverse of Osmosis and requires external force and the water flow from a high concentration (Inlet water) to low concentration (treated water). A reverse osmosis membrane is a semi-permeable membrane that allows the passage of water molecules but not the majority of dissolved solids.
3. Reverse Osmosis principle:
It works by providing a high pump to extend the pressure on the salt side of the water and force the water across the semi-permeable RO membrane, It reduce most (around 95% to 99%) of TDS (total dissolved solids) behind within the reject stream.
4. What is Permeate and Rejet Water
The desalinated water that’s demineralized or deionized, is named permeate (or product) water. The water stream that carries the concentrated contaminants that didn’t undergo the RO membrane is named the reject (or concentrate) stream
5. How Much Pressure Require:
The quantity of pressure required depends on the salt concentration of the feed water. The more concentrated the feed water, the more pressure is required to pass through the permeate or pure water.
6. Size of RO Membrane :
RO membrane rejects the impurities on the basis of their sizes and ions. The size of the RO Membrane is 0.0001micron or 10-10 meters.
B. Types of contaminants that Reverse Osmosis remove from water?
As we have said earlier that Reverse Osmosis is capable of removing up to 99% of the dissolved salts (TDS), suspended particles, pesticides, organic impurities, bacteria, and viruses from the feed water.
Although an RO system is not reliable for 100% removal of bacteria and viruses It can be provided with UV or UF membrane.

Whenever an RO Plant is designed it is mainly based on various factors. An RO system has instrumentation that displays quality, water flow as well as the pressure inside the RO membrane, and sometimes other data like temperature and hours of operation.
